Coal-Supply Regions
As the second largest producer of
coal in the United States, we utilize
state of the art equipment and mining
techniques. This maximizes our
efficiency in our mining operations in
the three main low-sulfur,
coal-producing regions:
Central Appalachia
Our operations in Central Appalachia are
located in southern West Virginia,
eastern Kentucky, and Virginia.
During 2007, these mining complexes sold
approximately 13.9 million tons of
compliance, low-sulfur and metallurgical
coal. We control approximately 338
million tons of proven and probable
reserves in CAPP.
Powder River Basin
Arch had sales volume of 99
million tons of coal in 2007 in the
southern Powder River Basin in Wyoming,
the nation’s largest coal-supply region.
This tonnage is produced at Thunder
Basin’s Black
Thunder and Coal Creek mines. Arch controls
approximately 1.75
billion tons of reserves in the PRB.
Western Bituminous Region
in 2007, Arch sold more than 19 million
tons of compliance coal from its
operations in this region, which
includes Colorado, Utah, and southern
Wyoming. The company’s Western
Bituminous operations include four large
underground mines and 460 million tons
of proven and probable reserves.
