Coal-Supply Regions
As the second largest coal producer in the
United States, we utilize state-of-the-art
equipment and advanced mining techniques. This maximizes
our efficiency in our mining operations in the
three main low-sulfur, coal-producing regions:
Powder River Basin
Arch had sales volume of 96.1 million tons of
coal in 2009 in the southern Powder River Basin
in Wyoming, the nation’s largest coal-supply
region. This tonnage is produced at Thunder
Basin’s Black Thunder and Coal Creek mines. Arch
controls approximately 2.8 billion tons of
reserves in the PRB.
Western Bituminous Region
In 2009, Arch sold more than 16.7 million tons
of almost exclusively compliance coal from its
operations in this region, which includes
Colorado, Utah, and southern Wyoming. The
company’s Western Bituminous operations include
four large underground mines and one surface
mine with a total of 467 million tons of proven
and probable reserves.
Central Appalachia
Our operations in Central Appalachia are located
in southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and
Virginia. During 2009, these mining complexes
sold approximately 13.3 million tons of
compliance, low-sulfur and metallurgical coal.
We control approximately 336 million tons of
proven and probable reserves in CAPP.
