Coal-Supply Regions
Arch Coal possess one of the industry's most
geographically diverse and balanced operating
profiles providing a powerful foundation on
which to build out metallurgical and thermal
volumes. The company serves a broad mix of power
producers and industrial accounts here and
around the world - offering a vast metallurgical
and thermal product slate and a wide range of
logistical options for delivery.
Powder River Basin
Arch is the second largest overall producer and
is the top producer of 8,800-Btu coal in the
Southern PRB - the nation's largest
coal-supply region. Operating two large surface
mines, Black Thunder and Coal Creek, the company
ships coal to power producers across the U.S., as
well as overseas. Arch controls
nearly 3.3 billion tons of reserves in
the PRB located in Wyoming and Montana.
Western Bituminous Region
Arch is the leading producer in the Western
Bituminous region, which is located in Colorado,
Utah and Southern Wyoming. Arch operates four
large underground longwall mines and one surface
mine and markets and ships coal directly to
domestic and international power producers and
industrial customers. The company has a total of
455 million tons of proven and probable reserves
in the region.
Appalachia
The acquisition of ICG has made Arch the second
largest producer in Central Appalachia as well
as a top five U.S. producer of metallurgical
coal. Arch has a 1.08 billion reserve base in
Appalachia. At least 431 million tons of those
reserves are characterized as metallurgical
quality - comprised of low volatile coal, high
volatile A and B coals as well as pulverized
injection coal. This gives Arch one of the most
extensive and highest quality metallurgical coal
reserve bases in the U.S. coal industry.
Illinois Basin
Along with the company's 49% equity
interest in Knight Hawk Coal, Arch operates the
highly competitive, low-cost Viper mine in the
Illinois Basin. Arch's extensive and
competitive reserve base of 736 million tons
provides a solid platform in a growth region
well positioned to export to the Atlantic Basin
market via the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, Arch is
currently in the process of permitting the
low-chlorine Lost Prairie reserves in Southern
Illinois.
