Community Outreach
Arch’s employees donate their time,
talents and enthusiasm to a wide variety
of social causes, with an emphasis on
education.
Our 11 mining complexes also contribute
volunteer time and give cash
contributions annually to local causes
such as adopting schools.
Arch’s Coal-Mac subsidiary and its
Phoenix mine sponsor an annual Earth
Day celebration for local students at
Omar Elementary. The employees of this
southern West Virginia mine donate time
for tours, a picnic, and other
activities. The students leave with a
tree sapling ready for planting.
Arguably the largest single mine in the
U.S., Black Thunder, in Wyoming,
sponsors Race for the Cure and conducts
more than 30 tours a year for school
groups.
West Virginia University received a
$50,000 grant from Arch Coal for unique
reforestation research. Arch has
achieved great success in growing
hardwoods on reclaimed lands, and this
one-of-a-kind study will enable us to
achieve even greater success in the
future.
And, of course, Arch’s signature
sponsorship -- the annual
Teacher
Achievement Awards. Arch Coal, Inc.
awards $50,000 in total cash prizes to
outstanding teachers from Wyoming,
West Virginia and parts of Utah, where a majority of
Arch’s employees and their families live
and work.
